The nature of the app means it's layout is going to be very busy, in order to keep the layout as simple as possible I want to keep the colour scheme monochromatic. I specifically wanted to try red and green, red being the colour of the World Snooker Association's logo, and Green being synonymous with the colour of the cloth on a snooker table.
I used the above images and the eyedropper tool to get the specific red from the logo, and a green from the left side of the photograph. I then used 50%, 20%, and 10% tints of them to experiment with different colour layouts.
The 50% tints were too overpowering, and sticking to the 20% and 10% tints was much more subtle. Because of this the reds had turned pink, which makes the layout look far too feminine, so I went with the green against the white background, which provided me with a fairly neutral background to test some typefaces against.
Fonts
I identified 4 fonts I wanted to test:
- Helvetica, the default font on Apple Devices
- Droid Sans, the font developed for use n Android Devices
- Verdana, a font that has large apertures, enhancing the differences between glyphs
- Open Sans, the font used on the WSA's Website
Helvetica |
Droid Sans |
Verdana |
Open Sans |
Upon the testing, I added different coloured rows to help differentiate between different games to make it easier for the user to look along the line of the table.
The tracking on Helvetica was too tight, which made it hard to distinguish the end of one glyph and the beginning of another in some places. The letterforms of Verdana are quite wide, which makes for an awkward contrast between them and the vertical screen. I found Droid Sans and Open Sans to be very similar, although I opted for Open Sans because of the slightly looser tracking.
I chose SemiBold as the weight as the contrast between the heavier appearance of the letters and the light background made them easier to read, without them being overpoweringly heavy.
