Freya Williams Self-Promotion - Physical Production

I met with Freya earlier to help with the physical production of her promotional packs. This was a lot of folding and cutting, I also used the laser cutter to make a wooden guide for the curved edge of the front page.

below are photographs of the final pack I'm keeping for my submission folder.

Freya Williams Self-Promotion - Final Folder Changes and Belly-Bands

Freya had given me the text for the inside left page, so I updated that. I also added tabs to the bottom which will make the flap more securely glued in. In a final attempt to get Freya to use plain white borders I sent her a copy of the file that was set up with white borders as well as the way she wanted it, so she has no reason not to print it.

I positioned the belly-bands on the offcuts to save printing costs for Freya.

Freya Willaims Self-Promotion - Changes

Freya sent me these images for me to size and position myself, this would allow me to be sure they'd be the same size as the other photo placed above the pattern. In order to make sure of this I edited them to look how they do below.

I then made some other changes which I'd discussed with Freya briefly, these were:

  • Adding a white border to the logo to make it more prominent.
  • Change the borders of the images from black to white, making them less prominent and more feminine.
  • Use Quiksand Light for body copy rather than Quiksand Regular to thin the text, this makes the body text less obvious than it currently does as the only use of black.
  • Change the background colour to the lightest pink from the colour sheet I sent to Freya - she decided she wanted to keep the background pink put make it very light.
  • Removed her phone number as she requested under advice from her tutor.
  • Re-positioned one of the velcro patches to be in the correct position having noticed ir was placed incorrectly in the test print.

The folder looks like this now - it looks more feminine although most of the changes won't really make much difference until it's printed.

I then looked at where the cuts on the cover would sit on the inside page if we chose to hold the business card in this way. I found that by using just two cuts I we'd have negligible encroachment over the images and none over any text. This is preferable than sticking some flaps on the front cover of the folder as it adds less complications to the process.

Freya Williams Self-Promotion - Prints

Freya printed out the files this morning to see how they looked in the flesh.

We were both really pleased with where the project is at. The folder works a lot better when printed on white stock rather than the pink stock we ordered, so we're going to experiments with different shades for the background - I sent Freya the below file to print so she could have a look at different options. The pink in the top left is the pink that we used currently that I think is too dark, hence why the other pinks are lighter. I've also included some creamy orange colours that are less obviously feminine in case Freya likes these more.

I also want to remove the border from the folder as I feel it's a distraction from the rest of the work as well as being a bit pixelated. I think a plain white border would work much better but I know Freya doesn't want it to be plain, I also think the background for the folder is too dark. This is something I'll discuss with her when I next speak to her.

The text on the back of the postcards hasn't printed very well in some places, I think this is quite nice as it matches the delicacy of the back of the postcards, but this is something I want to check is ok with Freya.

I took the below photographs of the business cards and postcards in case I need them for a portfolio soon.

Freya Williams Self-Promotion - Folder Development

Earlier today Freya sent me these pieces of work to include in the folder. These are the bits of work which her tutor said weren't represented by the folder. Upon seeing them, I agree, they're far more colourful and busy than most of her previous work.

She also sent me these photographs of her work used in soap packaging, she said she wanted to include these in the folder as well to show how her work can be used commercially. For this reason I'm leaning towards using the the above patterns that show how the pattern looks on a dress as it adds a context to the work similar to the soap packaging.

Freya said she'd like the inside left page to contain 2 of her Rio designs, a photo of the soap, and one of her Mexican designs, and the image on the back page should be changed to a Rio design too.

We decided to go with these patterns because we felt they matched the original designs we used on the postcards more than the other 2.

I then asked Freya if she could send me the Mexican drape she wanted to use in the same for as these - with it being used as clothes in front of the design itself. This allows greater continuity between the designs on the page. She sent me this one.

We'd previously discussed the feedback she'd gained on the folder from her tutor, who said that there was too much empty space for it to properly represent Freya's work. With all these things in mind I changed the folder to look like this.

I've sent these to Freya to get some feedback from her. One thing I do want to change regardless of Freya's feedback is the positioning and size of the people wearing the designs. Because of how I've had to re-size the images the photo's on them are inconsistently sized. I'm going to suggest to Freya that she sends the photographs separately so I can add them on top of the patterns myself in InDesign, this will allow me to keep a consistant size, making for a more polished finish.
